ABSTRACT

United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) activities for the implementation and observance of cultural rights are by no means limited to the preparation of normative instruments. In 1974, the General Conference of UNESCO adopted a Recommendation Concerning Education for International Understanding, Co-operation and Peace and Education Relating to Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. UNESCO is actively involved in the implementation of the Plan of Action for the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education. The Organization, through education, information, and documentation, as well as research and reflection, promotes human rights and makes them known and better understood. The Committee continues to examine it with a view to bringing about a solution designed to advance the promotion of human rights. To strengthen the protection of cultural rights, the Organization has elaborated more than thirty standard-setting instruments—conventions, declarations, and recommendations.
