ABSTRACT

Seeking the services of a counselor or a grief support system can be valuable tools in the recovery process. Professional counseling is an important resource in helping a person deal with life’s complexities. Children need parental support during this scary time in their lives when someone whom they love has died. Children need to be told that when someone they love dies, there is no right or wrong way to feel. They may want to be by themselves. They may need the security of hugs. They may want the freedom to cry. Children often cope with their loss by either reenacting the funeral or pretending to be sick or dying. Anger, guilt, anxiety, fear, sadness, and sometimes physical regression prevail. Their feelings about death will differ. Death affects people of all ages—children, adolescents, and adults. Grieving the loss of a loved one takes time and effort. It is a necessary step in the road to recovery.
