ABSTRACT

Founded in Dublin in 1977 by John O'Shea and four friends, GOAL is an international relief and development NGO dedicated to the alleviation of suffering among the poorest of the poor in the developing world and to assisting those coping with the aftermath of war and disaster. All Field Directors are well-versed in emergency procedures; it is GOAL'S policy to evacuate personnel as soon as life threatening situations arise. Naturally, the people attention is focused on the victims of these tragedies, but the volunteer doctors, nurses, logisticians, engineers who quietly get on with the work of helping as many of these victims as possible are deserving of immense respect. In the author 24 years experience of GOAL bringing aid to the needy the author would say that the greatest problem, the biggest barrier that the people have had to overcome, is that of official corruption, he has said.
