ABSTRACT

The author's son Dan, a Reuters photographer, was killed by an angry mob in Mogadishu on July 12th, 1993. Three other journalists, Hos Maina and Anthony Macharia of Reuters, and Hansi Krauss, of the Associated Press, also died that day, killed by the very people they were trying to help. The situation was tragic: believing that the hated warlord General Aideed was there, United Nations forces had bombed a house, killing or wounding over 50 men, women, and children. Dan was 22 when he died. Though young, his photographs had appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the world. He was proud of what he was doing in Somalia. As a former journalist, he had always encouraged Dan to stand up for the truth, to tell stories that mattered, and speak out when he saw injustice.
