ABSTRACT

A slight variation on the research design attempted to measure the effect that a question and answer session with health workers after the drama would have on the audience. After watching the play, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) participants were all the more convinced that drama could be very effective in Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) education. This chapter presents the views of both rural and urban FGD participants who watched the play “The Bitter Side of AIDS.” In Ghana, since March 1986 when the first two cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositives were reported from the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research at the University of Ghana, the number of HIV seropositives has shot up dramatically. Already in Ghana, a number of educational programs have been undertaken. The general objective has been to raise Ghanaians’ knowledge about AIDS to a level which would help produce changes in sexual behavior and practices to reduce the spread of AIDS.
