ABSTRACT

In order to assess the impact of the workshop on the knowledge, attitude, and possible practices of participants in relation to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a pre- and posttest was conducted. Getting traditional medical practitioners involved in the AIDS campaign posed a great challenge to health workers. In traditional African societies the traditional healer is a credible source who always works closely with the people since he or she is an integral part of the culture. Since the Alma Ata Declaration many health programs have integrated traditional health practitioners in their Primary Health Care activities. Traditional health practitioners comprise Herbalist, Spiritualist, and Faith healers. The activities of the traditional health practitioners are coordinated by the traditional medicine unit and the Traditional Practitioners Association of Zambia (TAPAZ). Subsequently provincial and district health education officers in conjunction with the local branch of TAPAZ worked out nominations to represent the region at a workshop.
