ABSTRACT

Technical editing is an important part of technical communication and perhaps even more important for the outsourcing environment. With regard to technical communication in general, it is an essential element in the creation and delivery of information units, such as documents, Web pages, and help files. Rather than being responsible for developing the information in the documents, technical editors serve as designers of the information and of the information units themselves (Rude, 2003). Within this broad position, editors have such roles as basic copyeditor, document coordinator, or overseer of the information within the document, including “the focus, organization, depth of coverage, language and supporting material” (Turpin & Bronson, 1997, p. 222). Rude calls this type of editing “comprehensive” (p. 13).
