ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, program administrators have witnessed the exploding

enrollment of students in online courses and have felt the pressure to transition

their course offerings online. The Instructional Technology Council (ITC) and the

Sloan National Commission on Online learning report a 20%–22% increase in

distance learning enrollments at colleges, versus overall campus enrollments,

which averaged a less than 2% increase in the 2008-2009 academic year (ITC,

2010; McCarthy & Samors, 2009). Trends indicate enrollment growth in distance

learning courses will continue at 2-and 4-year colleges (ITC, 2010).
