ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of technological management on the life course of the dying patient, paying particular attention to the idea of dying-with-dignity and harmonious adjustment of the dying patient's self to the terminal process. It explains the course of dying is often ignored by physicians and patients as specific symptoms and the medical treatment thereof become the center of the doctor-patient interaction. physical disease and the patient's perception of the disease phenomena are, however, largely the consequence of the modem approach to dying, namely, "denial" and technical intervention and management. The roller coaster journey of dying is a pilgrimage defined by the management of dying patients through technology. The technical molding of the dying process, with the sharp twists and turns of the roller coaster, serves to maintain the dying patient within the strictures of the sick role.
