ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the understanding of the personal, environmental, involvement, and socio-cultural factors influencing student retention. It analyses specific recommendations to increase Latino persistence in higher education. The chapter attempts to broadly report from the retention literature, socio-cultural factors that impact the persistence of Latino college students, and provides recommendations for appropriate institutional responses. The family and the home environment can be utilized as an effective retention tool by familiarizing Latino parents with the college setting and providing them with an opportunity to meet and develop rapport with college educators and support staff. The chapter examines some of the personal, involvement, environmental, and socio-cultural influences that impact Latino student retention in order to brush the surface of the retention literature and to highlight factors that affect Latino college student's persistence and retention, as well as providing recommendations for higher education institutions.
