ABSTRACT

Supporting people who are grieving or traumatized can be stressful work for managers and colleagues and can “open up old wounds.” It is therefore important to consider the support needs of not only staff directly affected by grief or trauma, but also caregivers who can find providing care and support at such difficult times to be a potentially stressful undertaking. This chapter provides helpful guidance on the issues to consider and the steps that need to be taken. Complicated grief therefore refers to those situations where an individual may be experiencing difficulties by grieving in ways that are different from how others generally grieve. Trauma and loss are very closely linked, in the sense that trauma can lead to losses and certain losses can, in themselves, be traumatic. However, it would be a mistake to confuse loss and trauma.
