Mourning in the Merina case involves the mourners taking on to themselves the pollution and sorrow of death, as though the mourners had to atone for the death of their kinsman. By taking on defilement the mourners clean the corpse and liberate it for its re-creation as a life-giving entity [6, p. 226].
