ABSTRACT

Relinquishing the designation of "undertaker," and its gradual replacement with the title of "funeral director" was part of this process. By 1940, following the North American example, the term "funeral director" had been adopted in most branches of the trade in Britain. In 1935 The British Undertakers Association became the National Association of Funeral Directors. The industry's journal, once "The B. U.A. Monthly," simultaneously became "The National Funeral Director"- simplified to "The Funeral Director" in 1953.
