ABSTRACT

Sincetheearly1980s,coalitionsoflabor,community,andenvironmentalgroups haveemergedinresponsetoenvironmentalandoccupationalhealthproblems andrapidlydeterioratingconditionsfororganizedlabor,workingpeopleandthe poor.Thesecoalitionsarepartofaglobalpopularstrugglechallengingthe destructiveconsequencesoftheglobalizationofcapital.Theyarepartoftheriseof community-based,workingclassenvironmentalism.Theyarecloselyrelatedto theemergenceofawidevarietyoflabor-communityalliancesfocusedonjob preservationandcreation,alivingwageandeconomicdevelopment,aprocess whichhasforcedthepreviouslyseparatenotionsof"community"and"labor" moretooverlap,whileremainingrespectfulofdifferences.Theenvironmentalism redefinedbytheworkingclassgrassroots-includingwomen,peopleofcolor,and labor-haslittletodowithprotectionofwildernessandthenaturalenvironment. Ithaseverythingtodowithprotectinghumanhealthandimprovingeconomic well-being.
