Thischapterandthenextfocusontherelationbetweenlaborpoliticsandcapital politicsasthecontextforthedevelopmentoftheLouisianaLabor-Neighbor Projectinthe1980sand1990s.1ThischapterexploresLouisianahistoryfor particularcluesindicatingatendencyforlaborpoliticstodeveloplabor-communityinstitutionsasawayofconfrontingcapitalistcrises.Italsoexamines thecreationoftheOil,ChemicalandAtomicWorkers'politicsofcollective identityasitwasshapedbythepoliticsoftheBASFCorporationandthe Louisianapetrochemicalindustry.Thenextchapterlooksattheideologicaland politicaltransformationofOCAW'slabor-communityprojectaftertheunion's tacticalvictoryoverBASF.
