ABSTRACT

Most modern models of bereavement theory see grief as a working through of emotion, the eventual goal being to move on and live without the deceased. They also want to spend time speaking with others who knew the deceased. Contrary to popular belief, speaking of the dead does not create more sadness or grief. Mac McCoy, a friend of mine who died of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related illness, was more than willing to share his feelings and thoughts with author on the subject of living with this disease. He was trying to reach some resolution of personal grief for his imminent death and also for his many friends who had died. AIDS is a serious national health problem. As we all struggle with this terrible disease and the devastation it is thrusting upon all of us, it is important to remember what has contributed to the spread of this disease.
