ABSTRACT

The eulogy is a key component of the funeral or memorial service. The essential elements for a meaningful eulogy delivered by a friend are: The friend-eulogist speaks as a representative; the friend-eulogist is grieving; and the friend-eulogist and those who listen are united in a need to give accurate witness to the life of this particular friend. The friend-eulogist makes the service personal by stimulating the memories of the mourners; honestly remembers and affirms the deceased; and honors the character of the deceased (Searl, 1993). A eulogy by a friend creates a public opportunity for friends to promise: We will not forget you.
