ABSTRACT

Have you noticed how everyone seems to have an opinion about death? There are arguments for and against having an abortion, favoring euthanasia, or believing in life after death. People become judgmental about suicide, fighting cancer, or contracting HIV. Even experimenting with ouija boards to contact the dead is no parlor game any more. “Pictionary” or “Nintendo” is seen as more neutral moral territory. And although it is not unusual to have an opinion about everything, particularly in a culture of talk-back radio, the moralism and belligerence of those opinions are an interpersonal traffic hazard for those who face death and loss on a daily basis.
