ABSTRACT

The strongest statement of security, safety, and care in the 150 psalms in the Bible comes from Psalm 23. And what makes it particularly dramatic, and also very poignant, is its coming hard on the heels of Psalm 22—passages which give voice to cries of dereliction, of abandonment. Out of these former depths of despair and self-doubt Psalm 23 emerges, like a solitary musical note growing slowly more loudly. As we read each new word, flickers of light cast themselves onto our beleaguered souls.
