ABSTRACT
At a conference some time ago in Washington DC, I caught up with my old friend Carl, an academic and counselor who, although American, works permanently in Japan. I took the opportunity to ask him about a small problem that had been brought to me by a Japanese relative. I told Carl my story this way.
