ABSTRACT

Considerable concern and controversy has appeared with respect to use of psychoactive drugs. Medical experts, scientists, parents, politicians, and others have expressed their opinions with respect to potential benefits/hazards of these drugs. The only commonly shared view is that the issue deserves careful study and attention. A Cost-Benefit Approach proposed individual’s decision to use drug(s) is reached through a rational, yet complex process of cost-benefit analysis. Thirty-five per cent of those who had tried tobacco products did not continue with their consumption of tobacco, while 39 per cent reported consuming tobacco products with a frequency of daily or more. A marijuana smoker may find smoking marijuana to be justifiable when subjected to cost-benefit analysis. Precise exposition of the factors which influence drug-trying in the first place and continuation/abandonment of use requires considerable research. In a sense, use of a drug is assumed to be determined by performance of a complex cost-benefit analysis.
