ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the difficulties of delivering online content to a multi-cultured, global audience. It discusses user-customizable online technology and suggests that technical communicators can utilize such tools to create information products allowing users to define their own culturally appropriate online experiences. The chapter presents a possible, already–existing solution to the difficulties some organizations may face when localizing online content for an international audience. It also presents a discussion of past research in Web site design and localization for international audiences. Extensible Markup Language and server-side scripting are both technologies utilized extensively when delivering dynamic online content. The technology known as server-side scripting fulfills a user’s request by running a script directly on a server to dynamically generate a Web page. User-customizable interfaces have also been suggested for technologies that support synchronous, distributed group collaboration. The chapter concludes by demonstrating how to apply the technology to an international online content delivery scenario.
