ABSTRACT

The Q'ewar House, set high above the village of Andahuaylillas in Peru, looks out at the velvety green mountains of the Andes. The Q'ewar women are encouraged to converse and create community with one another as they work, as an important element of this enterprise is empowering each of these young women to find her own voice. Julio Herrera Burgos and Lucy Terrazas, the founders and directors of the Q'ewar Project, view themselves as equals with the doll makers and have designed a primarily horizontal organization. Julio Herrera Burgos, age 54, a Peruvian sculptor and educator, is the visionary behind the Q'ewar Project. In addition to her work with the Q'ewar project Lucy is an elected member of the mayor's staff for the community of Andahuaylillas. The Q'ewar Project provides many benefits for its workers, including childcare, education, and healthcare.
