ABSTRACT

Barry Commoner’s eightieth birthday is an occasion to look at the phenomenon of junk corporate science, which must be viewed in the context of the power game. The subject of corporate science, commercial science, must be viewed in the context of the power game. Just like bought-and-paid-for politicians and bought-and-paid-for media, bought-and-paid-for scientists are an instrument of corporate power. Corporate joint ventures with various departments in universities have led, in turn, to several consequences. And speaking of global, the controversy over global warming is moving toward an increasing consensus that, indeed, it is occurring and it is associated with the activities of human beings, especially the burning of fossil fuels. The critique of the global warming position misses one of the major points, which Barry Commoner has often pointed out, and that is in responding to the global warming warnings.
