ABSTRACT

Using oral histories, this chapter explores the internal migration patterns of women now living in three low-income neighbourhoods in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, and the differences in education and employment between the two generations of women: the immigrant mothers and their São-Paulo-born daughters. Oral histories of 13 mothers and their daughters are used to explore economic and social change, as well as the trends in educational attainment and formalisation of employment. Along with better employment and educational opportunities and living conditions, the chapter shows the new possibilities for consumption, but also the high level of violence.
