ABSTRACT

The Brazilian Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands (PNGATI), as a national policy, will be reviewed in the context of two Indigenous groups, the Pataxó on Barra Velha Land, in Bahia, northeast region. This chapter aims at presenting historical, contextual and practical issues related to the Pataxó group of Barra Velha, in Bahia, with regard to Indigenous ethnotourism activities and ethnodevelopment advances. It provides an overview of pertinent Indigenous public policies and of territorial and environmental management tools as evidence that Indigenous groups have experienced new paradigms as ethnic minorities in Brazil with segmented forms of development and autonomy. For a better understanding of the Indigenous socio-cultural changes generated and the PNGATI it is important to present the concept of territory, territoriality and territorial management that is being considered. The activities of ethnotourism that take place in this village are buggy rides, beach and village visits, trails and Pataxó cultural performances.
