ABSTRACT

In this paper, we aim to explain the function of particles ta and pwa of the Old Javanese language on a syntactic level. Although the function of the particle ta as sentence (syntactic) constituent markers has been explained by experts, the difference between ta and pwa as the clause marker necessary in a discourse (a topical clause) has not been studied in detail. The data source used here is the Old Javanese narrative prose titled Adiparwa, which is estimated to be written in the 10th century. The explanation of the function of particles ta and pwa facilitates in-depth understanding of the aspects of the Old Javanese language, particularly for translating Old Javanese language texts to other languages.
