ABSTRACT

2Over time immemorial the fight against diseases has warranted development of drugs and drug delivery systems for achieving better disease management and improved survival. One such example is the method of preferentially accumulating active drug molecules at the relevant pharmacological sites, referred to as drug targeting. A journey that started with the concept of magic bullet by Dr. Paul Ehrlich, traversed through development of different delivery system, today has culminated into an era of modern drug therapy encompassing nano-sized drug carrier systems and/or medical devices. In this chapter the authors have attempted to describe the diverse approaches to achieving drug targeting with special attention to treatment of infectious diseases and cancer, focusing on the trending delivery systems being formulated. Whilst elaborating the advantages and application of this drug delivery boon, the authors have also touched upon the pitfalls and shortcomings of present day drug targeting systems.
