ABSTRACT

The term transgender refers to "people who move away from the gender they were assigned at birth, people who cross over the boundaries constructed by their culture to define and contain that gender". Transgender individuals experience harassment, physical assault, and sexual violence with alarming frequency and a staggering 41 percent of respondents participating in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey reported attempting suicide. While choir had previously felt like a home to her, it suddenly emerged as an unwelcoming place, fraught with hostile reminders that melanie did not belong, that transgender singers had no place in this community. J. M. Silveira and S. C. Goff explored music teacher attitudes toward transgender students, finding generally positive attitudes among survey respondents. Music educators especially have the power to have a positive impact on the lives of trans students.
