ABSTRACT

This chapter presents findings arising from the first of two classroom projects designed to investigate learner collaboration in a technology-mediated EFL classroom environment with Japanese university students. It focuses in particular on presenting the learners' perceptions of the Podcast Project arising from semi-structured interview data, field notes and video data. The chapter considers data from the Podcast Project to investigate learner collaboration from a variety of perspectives. A twenty-five-item questionnaire was designed to investigate learners' patterns of access, frequency and use vis-à-vis digital technologies and Web 2.0 applications. Responses were based on a 5-point Likert Scale. The chapter shows the frequency with which students would like to use digital technologies and applications for specifically studying English. It also shows the extent to which participants felt more or less knowledgeable about technology than their peers, parents, grandparents and teachers. Semi-structured interviews with individual learners in two dyads enabled learners to reflect on their involvement with the tasks in the project.
