ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify the shift in the event and catering business, from the unorganized to organized sector in India. The chapter highlights the various reasons for the unorganized nature of these industries and the influences which brought about the radical change to transform them into becoming organized. The change of mindset, the shift in lifestyles, and the increase in disposable income have been big influences in changing the nature of these industries. Time has actually given these two industries a different perspective and a self-identity. Households previously have been organizing events and making their own food as a part of their family duty. Much of this demand is now being outsourced either to catering businesses or event management firms. There is an impact of macroeconomic funda- mentals on these industries and it is interesting to note, how the two indus- tries coexist depending on each other. The easing of government regulations toward opening new companies in India is identified as one of the key reasons for the increase in competition in these two industries. However, an explicit tax and legal structure shows the disparity in the business patterns amongst the industry players. A specific skill set for these industries has been identi- fied and the seasonal nature of these industries is inherent, which explains why human resource is so easily available during peak business. Both the industries, centered in creativity, are increasing the top line of a number of other businesses. Technical advancements are also acting as a catalyst to the growth of these industries. The latter part of the chapter addresses, what are the current factors which are influencing further growth, as well as limiting its double digit revenue trajectory. A detailed SWOT analysis showcases the real picture of the two industries in this dynamic business environment.
