ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the significance of the emerging need for skilled and trained manpower in the hospitality industry, with particular reference to hospitality businesses in the Indian setting. The purpose of this chapter is to identify and build a set of indicators that will help the hospitality industry in identifying the key factors, which have contributed to an emerging and almost critical need for skilled and trained manpower in the context of the Indian hospitality industry. The methodology involves literature review, along with aggregation and analysis of case studies from the Indian context. The discussion includes some of the key aspects, issues, and challenges that the industry faces as it grapples with a growing demand for skilled and trained manpower and proposes a framework to address the same. The study will provide useful implications for professionals, researchers, policy makers, and academicians in the hospitality industry to address the above mentioned issue which is threatening to hold the industry back as it makes a push for growth and profitability. The “Skill India” initiative is a step in the right direction. The chapter reviews the initiative and its impact as of now, with recommendations for stronger and more effective implementation.
