ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the desired end-state: To perceive unequivocal value in relationship-promotive action. It explains how people make progress towards the goal of perceiving unequivocal value and meaning in caring for the partner and relationship. The chapter argues that the motivational machinations that restore value and meaning in action depend on the decision context, that is, whether it is an initial versus ongoing choice and overall progress in pursuit of value as represented by chronic commitment. It focuses on the uncertainties provoked by initial romantic choice. The chapter also focuses on the motivational machinations that create and sustain a sense of value in action, such a sense of conviction is much more difficult to sustain for some people and in some relationship contexts than others. The findings spoke to the power of the need to construct value in action: Parents in the "uncertainty" condition were much more pronatal in their proselytizing than parents in the "certain" basis for action condition.
