ABSTRACT

This chapter clarifies the relationship between big data and the intelligence community. The author argues that there are six broad typologies of large-scale data collection and that these typologies constitute multiple big data problems that filter into the intelligence community. As cyberspace becomes ubiquitous, it is incumbent on intelligence agencies to leverage and incorporate data to provide strategic and tactical insights for decision makers. Understanding the intelligence community as a big data computational system can help to orient both the community and policymakers toward potential improvements in system design and function.
