ABSTRACT

A stem and leaf plot is one among many ways to visualize a set of scores. The strength of the stem and leaf plot is that it quickly summarizes the data, while presenting every data point in the distribution. The stem column is the tens place for scores, and the leaf column is the ones place for scores. Start at the bottom. The stem column has a 5 in it, and the leaf column also has a single 5 in it. A stem and leaf plot can be thought of as a way to visualize the frequency of scores, while maintaining the individual scores. This chapter examines clinician variation in Competency to Stand Trial (CST) opinions within two statewide samples of clinicians: Virginia and Alabama. The stem is the tens place, and the leaf is the ones place. In addition, the data in the stem and leaf plot are percentages, so the bottom row should be read as 55".
