ABSTRACT

The box and whisker plot is a simple way to visualize the spread or dispersion of a set of scores. The whiskers are the lines that extend out from the top and bottom of the three rectangles. Serotonin is an important chemical in the brain. It helps communicate signals between brain cells. For depressed individuals, serotonin is not as efficient in communicating signals between brain cells. This chapter investigates serotonin genes and the uptake of serotonin in the blood when individuals are given a drug that boosts serotonin levels. The baseline clinical evaluation was completed in close proximity to the biological studies. Blood was drawn between 0800 and 1000 hours for genotyping and 5-HT uptake measures. Eighty-eight of the 99 enrolled patients completed the 6-week treatment trial. The chapter estimates what percentage of the s/s group has Vmax scores that are higher than the scores of every l/l individual.
