ABSTRACT

A scatterplot visually depicts the relationship between two variables on the xy-coordinate plane. One variable is on the x-axis, and the other variable is on the y-axis. Patterns in the dots speak to the nature of the relationship between the two variables. Diagonal patterns of dots, from the lower left to the upper right, indicate a direct or positive relationship. This chapter focuses on the period 1957–89, during which the driving while intoxicated (DWI) legislation remained unchanged in Norway, as well as in Sweden. The DWI proxy for Sweden comprised the number of people suspected of DWI per 100 000 inhabitants. These data are based on the information gathered by the police at the scene of the crash. Data on total alcohol sales in litres of pure alcohol per inhabitant were used as proxy for total alcohol consumption. These data comprise the basis for official statistics on DWI.
