ABSTRACT

We believe that experiential teaching and learning is critical to promoting cultural sensitivity. The exercises in this chapter are designed to enhance cultural sensitivity by focusing upon self-reflective processes as well as awareness. These exercises will assist trainees in becoming more fluent in “cultural talk” and will enable them to recognize their “own culturally-based emotional triggers” (Hardy & Laszloffy, 1995, p. 228). The ability to recognize one’s triggers and hot-button issues is critical to effectively manage discomfort and intensity during emotionally charged conversations.
