ABSTRACT

For several artists, their engagement with home has been a durational practice, a process of thinking and rethinking, of discovery and re-discovery. There are connections between Benning’s work and Finn’s extended practice of her parents’ house in Deal, on the difficulties of maintaining the fabric of a building. This chapter looks at the ways in which artists have performed home in multiple or extended works, perhaps varying practices and in one or more dwellings. It focuses on the breadth in form and structure of dwellings, given the growth internationally of innovation, informal architectures and the use of open-source architecture plans. For several artists, their engagement with home has been a durational practice, a process of thinking and rethinking, of discovery and re-discovery. Some artists will make one project in and about home, others will only make projects about home; some will be short, single events, others will unfold by turns over months or years.
