ABSTRACT

Using recent trade data, we confirm the image that South America as a whole region is a net importer of environmentally sensitive products. Partially related to Colombia’s ambition to join the OECD, the country statistics regarding environmental data seek to fulfill certain standards regarding detail and quality. This allows us to analyze Colombia in a case study. Applying an environmental extended input-output approach, we reveal that the country has turned from being a net producer of carbon dioxide in 2005 to being a net consumer in 2011. However, the overall carbon footprint of Colombia has increased as emissions embodied in imports have risen.
