ABSTRACT

Against the backdrop of the Paris Agreement and recent arguments for and against consumption-based accounting, this chapter provides a review of earlier input-output analytical studies related to carbon footprints of Japanese consumption. The review emphasizes the importance for Japanese climate policy in considering carbon footprints to detect additional opportunities for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from the demand side. Furthermore, the necessity of a climatic – economic – resource policy nexus for the pursuit of sustainable development goals (SDGs) is argued, with special regard to trade-offs between climate change mitigation, economic growth, and resource consumption.
