ABSTRACT

An important aspect of the Paris agreement is the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism fostering the transfer of technologies from developed to developing countries. This chapter combines multi-regional input-output analysis (IOA), dynamic energy-economy-environment models and the literature on technological change in renewable energy technologies (RET) to model the impact of the global diffusion of RET on European consumption-based emissions. The results clearly show that a reduction of consumption-based emissions needs to be achieved from two sides: a reduction in total consumption and a reduction in the emission intensity of production. An explicit support of the diffusion RET is necessary to accelerate this development.
