ABSTRACT

The new microbial fuels have great potential to replace or supplement petroleum-derived liquid transportation fuels. In recent years progress has been made in the development of microbial strains that convert simple sugars into advanced biofuel such as butanol (Green, 2011; Visioli et al., 2014) or higher alcohols (Atsumi et al., 2008a) which can be used as substitutes for gasoline (Lee et al., 2008a).
