ABSTRACT
The oldest form of power-producing turbine is that utilizing the motive power of water. Flowing rivers, streams, and waterfalls have had their energy extracted by vanes or buckets fixed to the circumference of rotating wheels. Although these waterwheels were designed and built as late as the 19th century and some of them were fairly efficient, they eventually gave way to more powerful machines requiring reservoirs.
