ABSTRACT

The hagiologic genres hagiographies, icons and hymns about saints work across modes. One example of this is the textual hagiography about priestly new martyr Serafim Chichagov in parallel with the hagiographic icon of the same new martyr. The 19-page hagiography provides several arguments for Serafim's sainthood and, more specifically, for his righteous pastorship. He was deeply engaged in the organization of Church life and the instruction of priests, the hagiography explains. Another saintly trait which the hagiography emphasizes is Bishop Serafim's mercifulness and his focus on charity. The hagiography contains two references to miraculous events, both of them in embedded texts. The first is Serafim Chichagov's own reflections in his famous 'Diveev chronicles' which he wrote as an argument for the canonization of Serafim of Sarov. The outermost saint on the right side of Christ is St Serafim of Sarov who was an important saint in the life of Serafim Chichagov and whose name he took at his tonsure.
