ABSTRACT
This chapter presents that agenda and the development of one of the newest indices, but one that will no doubt grow in importance, the Sustainable Development Goal Index (SDGI). One of the challenges faced by those having to work with the SDG suite of indicators, and indeed those of the earlier Millennium Development Goal (MDG), is the need for both quantity and quality of data to populate them. There are well-established methods for analysing pictures and videos and these come under the broad heading of ‘content analysis’. The Night Light Development Index provides an intriguing example of how technology can influence the future of indicators and indices. The SDGs follow on from the MDGs but are intended to be truly global; almost every country has signed up to the SDGs while the MDGs were primarily seen as something for the less developed parts of the world.
