ABSTRACT

It is time to begin the work to develop and deploy the electronic health record. The tried and true phases of deploying IT functionality and hardware will apply to this project. A project begins with requirements definition. To deliver an EHR in the least waste way, we should know what to build before we build it. What we are assembling first is the team of resources needed to complete the project. The team will be composed of three sets of stakeholders; each stakeholder will have a role to play in developing and deploying the EHR. The first stakeholder group is the project team. This group will consist of IT resources, clinicians, administrative personnel, and management. This group will coordinate and complete the activities necessary to deploy the functionality and hardware. Using the Lean project management approach can reduce the timeline for execution by 25–50% and reduce project rework by 50–75%.
