ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationship that young adult stepgrandchildren have with their stepgrandparents. The stepgrandparents from the remarriage following the divorce of a parent were evaluated lower on importance of the relationship than stepgrandparents from the remarriage following the death of the biological parent. Stepgrandchildren who were more dissatisfied with the remarriage of their parents rated the relationship with their stepgrandparents as less important. New stepfamilies might begin to understand the importance of establishing relationships with stepgrandparents, especially when the children are young. The relationship with their stepgrandparent has potential for becoming an additional resource to their family. Potentially, higher occupational prestige of the stepfather could infer more job mobility for the stepfamily, creating distance from the stepgrandparent. The stepgrandchildren reported that they see their stepgrandparents between several times per year and once per year on the average and would like more contact.
