ABSTRACT

Attempting to develop a socially focussed integrated model that draws on the combined evidence around desistance and recovery, this chapter creates an elaborated version of the CHIME model (Leamy et al., 2011), which stands for Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning and Empowerment. In this approach, human Connection is a fundamental prerequisite for the generation of Hope as a social contagion. Hope then acts as the impetus to motivate a virtuous circle of engagement in Meaningful activities which generates improvements in a sense of Empowerment which helps to drive positive changes in both personal and social Identity. The chapter lays out evidence supporting this approach and questions for future research that arise as a result.
