ABSTRACT

This integrated review, from the years 1960 through March, 1990, presents the state of the art in reminiscing and life review. Three areas—reports, reviews, and research—classify the existing literature, which is analyzed for positive or negative outcomes. This classification sorts the varied articles and defines the use of the existing literature for practice. Perceptions and direction are garnered from previously published reviews. Reports are discussed, and, finally, the research literature is examined for its collective worth as a basis for practice. From this analysis of the work in reminiscing, conclusions may be drawn and suggestions made for the use of reminiscing by practitioners who work with older people. (A tabular listing of this integrated review appears as an Appendix on pages 32–48.)
